The Diary of Nsikak Andrew

This day 25th December 2020, I decided to officially begin "Diary of Nsikak Andrew''. It is my desire to chronicle my life experience in this book. Time is running and I am running with time. As the idea drops, so shall I put it down into writing. As I stumbled on the needed materials, So shall I let it out for this post. I just want to have fun doing this, I think I was born to do this.

 Diary of Nsikak Andrew

16th October, 2020, I stumbled on my application on Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) Programme, Anglophone West Africa and Foundation for Environmental Development and Education in Nigeria (FEDEN) call for application to join Lead Associateship Training Programme, aply@lead.org.ng, Close September 30, 2006. www.lead.org.ng.

Here It is:
Professor Adeniyi Osuntogun,
Regional Programme Director
FEDEN/LEAD-Anglophone West Africa
8 Thorburn Avenue, Yaba
P. O. Box 664 Yaba
Lagos, Nigeria.

Dear Sir,

Application to Join LEAD Associateship Training Programme

With reference to your advertisement on page 51 of The Guardian, Monday, June 19, 2006, I humbly apply to participate in the training programme.

I am a Batch `B' Corp member serving with the Total Productive Management (TPM) department of Consolidated Breweries Plc, Ijebu-Ode with the prospect of retention after my completion this August. I am 31 years, computer literate and possess an HND in Accountancy from Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. I foresee that the content outlined in the training will be of immense benefit in improving my leadership building ability and other functions needed in business and inter personal development.

I will be most grateful if my application is duly considered for the training.

Thanks and best regards.

Yours faithfully,

Nsikak Andrew

As I reminisce over, I realized I didn't get any feedback to join the programme. Such is like, we moved on. If you want anything good out of life, you need to constantly keep trying. You never would know which would become your pathway to success.

And like I found other words of inspiration written at the back of my mathematics lesson note. Remembering Baba Ghana lesson. My mind went back to the maths teacher who was working and after work in the evening, came to teach mathematics. Let's talk about Baba Ghana lessons. I remember him telling us if you attend this lesson and still fail English Language in WAEC, sorry for yourself.

The quotes:

A Scotish writer once said, "We the willing are led by the knowing have done so much for little that we can now afford to do anything for nothing".

Another with the name the ends with Stockholm ones said, "I have worked as long as I have strength to work for a purpose no one can impugn. The consciousness of this is the reward one which I deserved to earn".

Words of inspiration and motivation are meant to boost out thought and give us the needed encouragement to strive towards achieving our life purpose.

And talking about my service year at Consolidated Breweries Plc, Ijebu-Ode, I came across the company bus departure time.

First Bus
- 7:10am - Bus departs from Epe Garage.

Second Bus
- 7:45am - Bus departs from Epe Garage.

1:00pm - Bus departs from Factory to Epe Garage.
1:30pm - Bus departs from Epoe Garage to Factory.
2:30pm - Bus departs from Factory to Epe Garage.

5.10pm - Bus departs Factory to Epe Garage.
5.45pm - Bus departs from Factory to Epe Garage.

In all of this, you need to leave your home earlier in order to catch up with the bus. And if you are at the Factory, you need to close ealy so as to join the bus. It was fun working and learning the culture of a working environment.

The Brewery Cost Model was what I was involved in. It was all about how to have Zero losses during the time of production. And here is the breakdown of what I had to learn.

Corporate Audits
- Revised audit system.
- Problems and tools.
- Standard layouts.
- Machine boards.
- Audit sheets.

Preparation Phase Gate Review
- Cost model.
- Communication plan.
- Link between KPL and Cost.
- Training on Auditing.

Pilot Phase Gate Review
- Reporting system.
- Safety losses.
- Brewery model.
- Gap analysis.
- Savings book.
- OTIF (On Time and In Full).
- Traffic.
- Team books.

Whatever all these were, I can still remember my duty was to get a daily report from the packaging department where the actual production was taking place. I was to get those incharge to fill the form where after the SWOT analysis is done. We were to look into the cost savings, brewery model, production cost model, savings book, KPI based on the brewery model objective to produce more at the same time or produce the same at less time. In all of these, I had a good time learning how the production in the factory works.

17th October, 2020, I found out from my collection of write-up That I resume work with EMSEL Group on 11th April, 2005. Emsel Group was owned by Mr. Etofia, the then Local Government Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. That was the place I worked last before heading for Service.

Here I found some of the daily things I learn in the Printing press where I was at their computer section. Cropping with Adobe Photoshop 7.0 which has to do with pictures, scan text book (scripting). Working or editing pictures which has to do with brightening and contrast, level, editing affected parts of the pictures.

Working with pictures in CorelDraw which has to do with brightening/constract, level, feed to object, editing feed object using the right mouse. Working with text, plastic text and objects which have to do with shadowing and increase shadowing.

Learning about printing, colour separations, pressing down F5 when printing.

12th April 2005, I got an embarrassment with printing in hp 5100. And I learnt adjustment in printing, separation of colour. In A2 paper, you need to keep it at portrait but change to landscape when printing. set twice when printing, select 300dpi and right click and select print from sheet. I Wish I can still remember all these hidden knowledge in printing from com[puter.

And need I tell you that I learnt Photoshop 7.0, how to treat pictures and canvas size. And CorelDraw 11 on how to plastic a text, convert to BMP, shadow outside. A whole lot of learning and what would I say. A big thanks to Uncle Raph for updating me. Not forgetting my college Ubong, wherever you guys are, much love from me here.

Still today, I found the 3rd Convocation Ceremony of the school I attended. Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Ikot Ekpene. Date of convocation was 11th - 13th May, 2006, venue was the convocation ground.

At the time of our convocation, Obong Ukpong Dan Umoh was the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Governing Council, Otuekong Eddie Etim was the Rector, Obong Sylvester J. Akpan was Deputy Rector, Mr. Francis O. Eyo was the Registrar, Elder E. T. Etuk was the Bursar, Elder Jackson S. Umoh was the Polytechnic Librarian and the members of the Governing Council were Ho. Umana S. Umana, Arch. Iniobong J. Ukpong, Mrs. Mercy E. Bassey, Apostle M. A. Ekpo, Dr. Barr. Asuquo O. Anwana and Surv. David E. Essien.

Now I found on the programme of events the School Anthem

O! Akwapoly, in love and unity we stand
In search of glory for you
and all that you have raised
(and all that you have raised)
Mother of fame, contre of excellence
Thy wisdom is rare and fair
Pillar of skills, beacon of progress
We pledge to do our best.

We seek to raise your gains on high
Let's arise and hoist the flag

Our dear mother, we sing another stanza
Of this melody of praise: a memoir of virtues (a memoir of virtues)
Our chasm will melt into a charming allure
To uphold thy dignity
We will abhor not your motherly reproof
Our mettle we pledge to prove.

Did I ever sing this anthem? It is like I am coming to see this, this day.

And my search continues. This time, I found Gateway Kop, a monthly bulletin of NYSC Ogun State. Vol. 4 November, 2005. The price boldly written on it ₦20. Time in this country when ₦20 can buy you something reasonable. Inside the bulletin, I found an application form for admission into Lagos City Computer College, affiliated to Lagos City Polytechnic, established 1990. Like I remembered some memories wayback after my secondary school to attend the same computer college at Ikeja Lagos but no funds. Here I registered but still couldn't complete the training.

What got me thinking here was my career objective I found in the form which I said, "To fuse Information Technology with accounting practice" signed 16th November, 2006.

Smiling here after seeing this to which I copied into a plain paper:

Please be reminded that registration of Corps members will take place in the first three days of the Orientation programme i.e.  Wednesday, 7th - Friday, 9th September 2005.

This could remember was copied from the school board after I got a late minute call from one of my classmates that my name was among those for service while I was still in town working.

Anyhow I found one of seminars on Career Talks organised by Voice of Empowerment Club (V.O.E.C) hld on the 31st May, 2006 at Itoro Hall, Ijebu-Ode with the Theme, "Youths: The Owners of Tomorrow".

Some of the highlights of the career talks were the inevitability of living, preparing your fire escape, relationship and networking, an unshakable faith with God, career in the private and public sector or as one man business.

The moderator started with a question of how many first class are here. What do you want to be, search your gifts (talents), do you dream, temperament, remove procrastination, develop your mental mind by reading, spend money on training, face challenges, believe in yourself and be focused. He made these outstanding quotes, "A misinformed man is a deform man". "Degrees are for losers''.

Taking a look at it, we need to build up ourselves in order to face the many challenges of life. What you know is what will be of help to you during the very time of crisis. What you know can't kill you. You are what you made yourself to be.

19th October, 2020. Today begins with a new hope, a new glory and a new determination to accomplish my desired goal in life. And what did I discover, a reply of my request from Saga Group to join their training programme wayback.

I am writing to confirm that your details will be held on file until our recruitment programme commences which we envisage being during May/June. The scheme is likely to commence sometime during September/October 2006.

I am also enclosing a leaflet giving you some information about Saga and would like to thank you for your interest in our Company.

Should you require any further information or should your circumstances change, please do not hesitate to contact me, quoting the above reference.

Yours sincerely,

Jane Grundy
Group HR Manager - Enbrook

You know it is during service and looking out to finish it. You begin to apply for any opening around. And training is one way to give into the level starting. I applied to so many organisations either for employment or training. It was something that was worth it. You never know which of your applications would click.

Like I came to know through the leaflet that was sent.

Saga Group Limited provides a broad range of services exclusively for people aged 50 and over, including holidays, home shopping, insurance and financial services and the award-winning Saga Magazine. We have been working in the interests of this age group since 1951 and have grown into an international organisation with companies in the UK, the USA and Australia. We are also hoping to expand into Europe.

Saga has been running a Management Training Scheme for the last 20 years and many of today's senior managers and directors joined the company on the scheme. The scheme provides Saga with a resource of talented and motivated individuals who have the knowledge and the expertise to make an important contribution towards the future of the business.

Looking back now, I wished I had a placement in the programme, who knows where I would be right now. Sometimes, our desire might not come to be but in all, we should learn to move on and never to know dwelling in the past. The past is bye-gone and so it shall be.
